My name is Andrew Boswell (but you can call me Andy) and I am a Utilitarian Ceramic Artist. My original experience with clay came from my father, sculptor and potter, Ray Boswell. I owe the founding of my skills in clay and on the potter's wheel to my dear ol' dad. My mother, Theresa Boswell, a jeweler and gallery owner helped broaden my sense of Utilitarian Art. Later I studied ceramics at the School of American Crafts at the Rocehter Institute of Technology under Julia Galloway, Rick Hirsch and Liz Howe. While at RIT, I was able to turn my interest in clay into a profession.
I currently live in Sugar Loaf and work alongside my father at the Bostree Pottery Studio. I taught ceramic classes to adults, but I am now concentrating completely on perfecting my own body of work. My work has appeared in shows ranging from Baltimore, MD to New Paltz, NY.
Now that I have finished teaching, my full attention can be focused on perfecting my craft. Because of this increase in time commitment, I have begun to make the best work of my life and continue to expand, grow and rapidly improve.
My formal aesthetic leans towards objects which are luscious; sometimes round, sometimes slender but always curvaceous with a lightness that almost visually translates into buoyancy. The underlying structure is always strong and organized but blanketed in a sensual form. My glazes accentuate the shape and structure while also providing a place for your eyes to rest. These places allow your eyes to sink in to the depth and richness of the glaze thus allowing you to enjoy the vibrance and colors on the surface.
I believe objects help us customize the space we live in. They allow for a moment of peace, introduce a small amount of calm and help us identify home. They allow us to intimately express ourselves in our most personal spaces. Sometimes peace is having a cup of tea in your favorite mug after a long day of work. Sometimes joy is having a dinner party with your closest friends. Beautiful objects can facilitate a beautiful world.
I hope you enjoy my website. Thank you for visiting!
